This result has been achieved by partners EDF and VUB. The result has been achieved on 31st August 2024 in month 45 of the project.
Introduction
This newletter summarizes the successful integration of the iStormy demonstrator to the EDF‘s test platform: Concept Grid. Several tests have been carried out to ensure the interoperability of EDF supervision with iStormy EMS and the different devices of the demonstrator.
Objective
The main goal of WP5 is to demonstrate the operation of the battery on a real grid (Concept Grid test platform) through three use-cases defined in the project (WP1).
Research
To that end, the project developed Hybrid Battery Energy Storage System (HBESS) is installed at the Concept Grid experimental platform and connected to a 20kV/400V and 400kVA substation. The battery is also connected to a load (EV fast charging station of 350kW maximal power), a PV farm (120kWc) and a power amplifier (400 kVA). The first two assets will mainly be used for the use-cases two and three.
In addition, test communications are carried out to ensure the control of both converters developed in WP3 with the EMS. A simple graphical user interface (GUI) has been developed to perform the communication test from EDF supervision.
Results
iStormy container is connected to the low voltage distribution of EDF and connected to the communication network of EDF. It can be operated either in the grid connected mode or islanded mode.
- What will it be used for: Given this integration, the system will be tested on 3 different use cases, corresponding respectively to the provision of:
- Services in stand-alone to the interconnected pan-European grid (frequency support)
- Load levelling for EV charging service stations
- Services to island grids (PV shifting and frequency support)
- Impact: The impact lies in the integration of the demonstrator to the Concept Grid test platform, allowing to provide in a nearby future, experimental results for the software developed during the project, as well as a proof of concept validation.
