Nederlandse Organisatie voor toegepast-natuurwetenschappelijk Onderzoek TNO

Nederlandse Organisatie voor toegepast-natuurwetenschappelijk Onderzoek TNO (TNO) is one of the major contract research organisations in Europe. With a staff of approximately 3500 and an annual turnover of 580 million Euros, TNO is carrying out research in order to achieve impact on the following seven themes: Healthy Living, Industrial Innovation, Transport and Mobility, Energy, Built Environment, Information Society, and Defence, Safety and Security. TNO functions as an intermediary between basic research organizations and industry. By translating scientific knowledge into practical applications, TNO contributes to the innovation capacity of businesses and government. TNO is involved in many international projects including EU-funded collaborations.

The Powertrains department focuses on applied research for efficient and sustainable powertrain systems that optimize overall system performance for both the on/off-road and maritime transport industry. It has a strong international track record for different applications from passenger cars to heavy-duty road and waterborne transport and generates solutions to address challenges that arise from increasingly strict emission regulations and greenhouse gas targets by using an Integrated Optimization Framework with validated methods for predictive control strategies based on combined emission and energy management concepts. Part of TNO’s PT department pursues the support of OEMs and TIERs in their developments regarding Battery Energy Storage Systems. For this purpose, TNO investigates and applies current and future technologies related to batteries in vehicles and develops control strategies for battery management systems and predictive energy management. The laboratories of PT are situated on the High-Tech Automotive Campus Helmond and strong relations exist with university research groups that are active in the same area.
